Bitcoin Short Setup Below $82K VWAP: Entry, Stop, Targets

BTC/USDT: $81,749.1 (1H). Bitcoin is trading just under a tight cluster of moving averages after failing to hold the $82K area. Price is capped by the 24h VWAP at $82,152.1, and the 48h range runs from $80,622.0 to $83,157.9. Headlines about US spot ETF outflows are adding to the softer tone, while Bollinger Bands are squeezed to 1.0% width, so a larger move is likely building.

Indicator Analysis

Moving Averages

The MA20 ($81,949.4), MA60 ($81,881.2) and MA120 ($81,800.1) are still stacked in bullish order. Price, however, sits below all three. The averages are compressed within roughly $150 of each other, which signals a market that has lost direction on the hourly chart rather than one in a clean uptrend. As long as price stays below $81,800–81,950, that cluster acts as overhead resistance.

→ Bullish stacking, bearish placement: the MA band is the first ceiling to reclaim.

RSI

RSI(14) reads 45.3. That is below the 50 midline but far from oversold, so sellers have a slight edge without any exhaustion signal. There is still room for price to drift lower before RSI reaches levels that typically attract dip buyers.

→ Mildly bearish and neutral-leaning; no reversal signal yet.

MACD

The MACD histogram is at -30.2, below the zero line, so the broader hourly momentum is still negative. The histogram is improving, though, and bullish momentum is building from below. This often shows up as a relief bounce inside a downswing, not necessarily a trend change.

→ Negative but recovering: expect a bounce attempt into resistance.

Williams %R

Williams %R at -44.9 places price near the middle of its recent high-low range. It is neither overbought nor oversold. The reading confirms that the last few hours have been rotation, not a decisive push either way.

→ Mid-range: no edge from this oscillator alone.

ATR

ATR(14) is $330.1, only 0.4% of price, which is low hourly volatility. Combined with the Bollinger squeeze, this compression usually ends in expansion. Stops should allow at least 1.5–2x ATR (roughly $500–660) so normal noise does not take you out.

→ Quiet tape, but a volatility breakout is likely; avoid stops tighter than about $500.

CCI

CCI(20) at -76.8 is in negative territory but has not crossed the -100 oversold threshold. Price is trading below its statistical mean without being stretched. A push below -100 would align with a test of the $81,200–81,500 zone.

→ Bearish lean, not yet oversold.

Stochastic

Stochastic %K (55.1) is just above %D (54.0) in the middle of the range. This small bullish cross matches the improving MACD histogram and supports the idea of a short-term bounce. A move toward 80 would likely coincide with price testing the $82,000–82,150 resistance.

→ Slight upward tilt: room for a bounce into the sell zone.

Keltner Channel

Price is below the Keltner midline ($81,935.9), and the channel runs from $81,233.8 to $82,638.1. The lower band also sits close to the Bollinger lower band ($81,539.4), so the $81,230–81,540 area is the nearest downside magnet. The upper band at $82,638 marks where a short thesis clearly breaks down.

→ Below the midline: the lower band near $81,234 is the first downside target.

Other supporting readings point the same way. Price is below the Ichimoku cloud ($81,889.9–81,922.4), the Tenkan ($81,692.6) is under the Kijun ($82,152.1), and ADX at 35.2 shows a strong trend. OBV fell by 5,779 BTC over 24h, which points to distribution, and MFI at 44.4 is soft.

On-Chain & Positioning

Today’s dataset does not include fresh readings for active addresses, stablecoin supply or hashrate, so these are left out rather than guessed. The chart below shows the broader on-chain context.

Bitcoin Short Setup Below $82K VWAP: Entry, Stop, Targets

  • Funding rate: 0.0095%. This is positive but well within normal range, with no sign of leverage overheating.
  • Long/short ratio: 1.72, with long accounts at 63.2%. The crowd is heavily long while price trades below VWAP, which creates fuel for a downside sweep.
  • Open interest: +0.27% over 24h. Positioning is roughly flat; traders are holding rather than adding aggressively.
  • Fear & Greed: 55 (Greed), down from 59. Sentiment is cooling but not fearful.

On the macro side, the US 10-year yield rose to 5.14% (+0.75%), which is a headwind for risk assets. This offsets support from a firm Nasdaq (+1.11%) and a softer dollar index (101.77, -0.2%). Crowded longs, ETF outflows and rising yields together make a flush toward $80K before or around FOMC a realistic scenario.

Today’s Position Strategy

SHORT Setup (Primary)

Item Level
Entry zone $82,000 – $82,250 (MA cluster / cloud top / VWAP-Kijun $82,152)
Target 1 $81,234 (Keltner lower band)
Target 2 $80,622 (48h low)
Stop (invalidation) $82,700 (above Keltner upper $82,638)

Price is below VWAP, the Ichimoku cloud and every major MA, and OBV shows distribution. The improving MACD and stochastic suggest a bounce first, so wait to sell into the $82K resistance rather than chase at current levels. A clean hourly close above $82,700 would mean the squeeze resolved upward and the short idea is invalid.

LONG Setup (Secondary)

Item Level
Entry zone $80,100 – $80,650 (80K support / 48h low)
Target 1 $81,750 (MA cluster retest)
Target 2 $82,150 (VWAP / Kijun)
Stop (invalidation) $79,450 (below 7d low $79,732)

With 63.2% of accounts long, a stop-run into the $80K area would clear weak hands. That sweep would likely offer a better risk-reward long than buying in the $82K zone. Only take this setup after a visible reaction at support, such as a long lower wick or reclaim of $80,622. A break below the 7-day low at $79,732 opens the way to the $78.5K second support.

Conclusion: sell the bounce into $82,000–82,250 while price stays below VWAP, and wait at $80K for a sweep-and-reclaim long instead of chasing.
