Bitcoin Short Setup Below $82K Ahead of FOMC

BTC is trading at $80,523 on the 1H chart. It sits just under the 20-period average and below every major moving average after a 48-hour swing between $82,035 and $79,178. The $80K level is acting as the market’s pivot, and the 7-day low and 48-hour low are the same print ($79,178.6), so the latest bounce has not changed the larger downward structure.

Indicator Analysis

Moving Averages

Price ($80,523) is below the MA20 ($80,543.6), the MA60 ($81,047.5) and the MA120 ($81,933.8). The averages are stacked in bearish order, with short below medium below long. Price is only about $20 under the MA20, so it is fighting for that line. The MA60 and MA120 overhead form a resistance ladder from roughly $81,050 to $81,930.

→ Bearish alignment; rallies into $81,050 to $81,930 are sell zones until reclaimed.

RSI (14)

RSI reads 58.9, above the 50 midline, which shows the recent bounce had real buying behind it. It is far from overbought, and the reading conflicts with price sitting under the averages. Buyers have short-term energy but have not converted it into structure.

→ Neutral-to-firm momentum, not enough on its own to justify longs under the MAs.

MACD

The MACD is still below the zero line, so the broader momentum regime remains bearish. The histogram prints a small +27.0, but the computed read still flags downside momentum as maintained. This is a minor uptick inside a negative regime, not a confirmed reversal.

→ Below-zero MACD keeps the bias tilted short.

Williams %R

Williams %R sits at -60.7, in the lower half of its range but not in oversold territory (below -80). Price is closing closer to the bottom of its recent range than the top. There is still room to fall before sellers get exhausted.

→ Mildly bearish with no oversold cushion yet.

ATR (14)

ATR is $223.2, or 0.28% of price, which is a fairly calm hourly range given the recent swings. One ATR is roughly $220, so stops tighter than about 1.5 to 2 ATR risk being hit by normal noise. Low ATR ahead of a macro event like FOMC often comes before an expansion.

→ Size stops at about $330 to $450 and expect volatility to pick up around FOMC.

CCI (20)

CCI is -7.9, sitting almost exactly on the zero line. That reading means price is near its statistical mean with no stretched condition in either direction. It confirms the neutral-to-slightly-soft tone rather than a trend extreme.

→ No edge from CCI; it defers to structure and positioning.

Stochastic

%K at 39.3 is below %D at 50.4, which is a bearish crossover heading toward the lower half of the range. Short-term momentum has rolled over from the recent bounce. Both lines are still well above 20, so the oscillator has room to fall further.

→ Bearish cross supports fading strength in the near term.

Keltner Channel

Price is below the Keltner midline ($80,654.8), with the upper band at $81,095.9 and the lower band at $80,213.7. The upper band nearly matches the MA60 ($81,047.5) and the Bollinger upper band ($81,122.4), which makes $81,050 to $81,120 a dense resistance cluster. The lower band near $80,214 lines up just under the 24h VWAP ($80,283.4).

→ The channel favors selling the upper band and targeting the $80,200 to $80,280 area first.

Other context: ADX is 29.5, which signals a strong trend, and that trend is down given the MA order. Price is inside the Ichimoku cloud ($80,392 to $80,607), so this is a range-within-a-downtrend. The 24h OBV is falling (-26,077 BTC), which points to distribution, while price holds 0.3% above VWAP.

On-Chain & Positioning

Today’s dataset does not include fresh readings for active addresses, stablecoin reserves or hashrate. Instead of guessing, this section relies on the derivatives and sentiment data, which carry most of the short-term signal anyway.

Bitcoin Short Setup Below $82K Ahead of FOMC
  • Funding rate: +0.0053%. Longs are paying, but at a modest rate, so funding shows no overheating.
  • Long/short ratio: 2.06, with 67.4% of accounts long. Retail positioning is heavily skewed long, which leaves fuel for a liquidation cascade if $80K gives way.
  • Open interest: +0.72% over 24h. New leverage is still entering while OBV shows distribution, a combination that tends to resolve to the downside.
  • Fear & Greed: 54 (Neutral), up from 51. Sentiment is not fearful enough to mark a capitulation low.
  • Kimchi premium: 1.09% (BTC at ₩107,870,000). The ₩107M level is support and ₩110M has flipped to resistance.

Macro adds headwind ahead of the Fed meeting:

  • The dollar index rose 0.2% to 101.81.
  • The US 10-year yield sits at 4.99%.
  • The S&P 500 fell 0.52%.
  • Gold dropped 1.29%.

Headlines about 220 of 300 altcoins falling harder than BTC, along with a one-month low tied to Middle East tensions, fit a risk-off tape.

Today’s Position Strategy

SHORT Setup (Primary)

Item Level
Entry zone $81,050 to $81,500 (MA60 / Keltner and Bollinger upper bands)
Target 1 $80,280 (24h VWAP / Keltner lower band)
Target 2 $79,960 (Bollinger lower band, below the $80K pivot)
Target 3 $79,200 (48h / 7d swing low)
Invalidation (stop) $82,100 (above the 48h high of $82,035)

The moving averages are in bearish order, MACD is below zero, the stochastic has crossed down and OBV shows distribution. That makes selling into the $81K resistance cluster the higher-probability trade. A 67% long-account skew with rising open interest means a break of $80K could speed up through liquidations toward the swing low. A clean hourly close above $82,100 would invalidate the setup.

LONG Setup (Secondary)

Item Level
Entry zone $78,500 to $78,950, only after support is confirmed
Target 1 $79,960 (Bollinger lower band reclaim)
Target 2 $80,540 (MA20 / Bollinger mid)
Target 3 $81,050 (MA60 / Keltner upper band)
Invalidation (stop) $77,950 (about 2.5 ATR below $78.5K)

The $78.5K zone is the month-low support area. It is the level where crowded longs would likely be flushed and where fresh demand could step in. Opening longs above $80K with this much leverage on the long side means buying into the crowd. Wait for a wick and a reclaim at $78.5K before committing, and keep size small ahead of FOMC.

This post is market analysis, not financial advice, so size positions to your own risk tolerance. Fee-payback signup links for BingX and Bitunix are at the end of this post.

Conclusion: The bias is mildly short. Sell rallies into $81,050 to $81,500 with a stop above $82,100, and save longs for a confirmed hold of $78.5K.
