Bitcoin Short Setup Below $81K as FOMC Nears

BTC is trading at $80,451.7 on the 1H chart. Price has stabilized after the weekend flush to $79,178.6 but keeps failing to reclaim its moving averages. The 48-hour range sits between $79,178.6 and $81,413.0, well under the 7-day high of $84,875.2, and the market is coiling inside a tight squeeze ahead of the Fed decision.

Where price actually sits — PRICE 80,452, RSI 44.2

The US 10-year yield is at 4.99% (+0.71% on the day), the dollar index is at 101.81 (+0.2%), and the S&P 500 lost 0.52%. Higher yields and a firmer dollar make it harder for bulls to press. The Korean premium is a modest 1.06%, so retail demand from that market is not overheated either. Fee-payback signup links for BingX and Bitunix are at the end of this post.

Indicator Analysis

Moving Averages

Price is below all three tracked averages: MA20 at 80,565.2, MA60 at 80,799.3 and MA120 at 81,728.5. The stack is in bearish order, with the short average below the longer ones. The gap to MA20 is only about $113, so this is a grind lower rather than a breakdown. MA60 and MA120 are the levels where rallies are likely to stall.

→ Bearish alignment; treat 80,800 to 81,700 as overhead supply.

RSI

RSI(14) reads 44.2, below the 50 midline but far from oversold. Sellers hold a slight edge without any exhaustion signal. There is room for another leg down before RSI reaches levels that usually attract dip buyers.

→ Mildly bearish, no oversold bounce signal yet.

MACD

The MACD line is below the zero line. The histogram prints a marginal +7.2, which is too small to count as a meaningful bullish turn. The model still classifies momentum as bearish and maintained. Until the MACD line recovers zero, upticks should be read as relief, not reversal.

→ Below zero; bounces remain suspect.

Williams %R

Williams %R is at -54.4, sitting in the middle of its range. It is neither overbought nor oversold, which matches the sideways tone. It gives no timing edge on its own today.

→ Neutral; wait for extremes near -20 or -80.

ATR

ATR(14) is $254.8, or 0.32% of price, which is a compressed volatility reading. Combined with a Bollinger width of only 0.92% flagged as a squeeze, the conditions point to an expansion move coming. Stops should allow for at least two to three ATR, since a release from a squeeze tends to overshoot.

→ Low volatility now; size positions for a breakout.

CCI

CCI(20) is at -52.1, below zero but well short of the -100 trend threshold. Price is leaning under its statistical mean without showing a strong directional push. This fits the weak-trend picture from ADX at 14.4.

→ Soft bearish bias inside a range.

Stochastic

Stochastic %K is 45.6 and %D is 48.9. %K is below %D in the mid-zone, which means short-term momentum is rolling over without being stretched. That leaves room for a drift toward the lower band before stochastics reach oversold.

→ Mild downside cross; no extreme.

Keltner Channel

The Keltner mid is 80,561.6, with the upper band at 81,020.6 and the lower band at 80,102.7. Price is below the centerline. The Bollinger bands (80,934.6 / 80,195.8) sit just inside Keltner, which confirms the squeeze. The Ichimoku cloud spans 80,405 to 80,545.5 and price is sitting inside it, which reinforces the range-bound read.

→ 80,100 is the first downside magnet; 81,000 caps rallies.

On-Chain & Positioning

Today’s dataset has no fresh readings on active addresses, stablecoin dry powder or hashrate, so this section relies on derivatives and flow data. The 24-hour OBV is falling, with a delta of -14,255 BTC, which points to distribution. Price also sits 0.18% below the 24-hour VWAP of 80,594.4. MFI at 46.8 shows money flow leaning slightly negative.

Bitcoin Short Setup Below $81K as FOMC Nears

  • Funding rate: 0.0042%. This is positive but mild, so longs are not paying a heavy premium.
  • Long/short ratio: 2.12, with 68% of accounts long. Retail is heavily positioned long into a downtrending structure, which is fuel for a stop sweep below recent lows.
  • Open interest: -3.17% over 24 hours. Leverage is leaving the market, so the weekend move was partly a deleveraging event.
  • Fear & Greed: 54 (Neutral), up from 51. Sentiment is not stretched in either direction.

Crowded retail longs, falling OBV and price below VWAP together argue for a downside liquidity grab before any durable bounce. Headlines noting that 220 of 300 altcoins fell harder than BTC also point to weak risk appetite.

Today’s Position Strategy

SHORT Setup (Primary)

Entry zone Target 1 Target 2 Stop
80,950 – 81,400 80,100 79,200 81,750

The short zone runs from the Bollinger and Keltner upper bands up to the 48-hour high. It sits below MA120 and is where a relief bounce into bearish moving averages should fade. The stop is placed above the 48h high plus about 1.3 ATR, so the 82k resistance is not needed to be right. Target 1 is the Keltner lower band, and Target 2 retests the weekend low, where 68% of long accounts are likely to have stops.

LONG Setup (Secondary)

Entry zone Target 1 Target 2 Stop
78,900 – 79,200 (after sweep) 80,100 80,800 78,300

Take this only after price sweeps the 79,178.6 low and reclaims it on the hourly close. That pattern would show the crowded longs have been flushed. The stop sits below the 78.5k support, the weekend capitulation zone. Targets are the Keltner lower band and MA60. With ADX at 14.4, this is a range scalp and not a trend trade, so take partial profits early.

If the squeeze breaks above 81,750 on volume with MACD crossing zero, step aside on shorts and reassess toward 82k. The FOMC outcome and the 10-year yield near 5% are the main catalysts that could force that expansion. This post is market analysis, not financial advice; manage your own risk and leverage.
