Bitcoin Short Setup Below $82K as Longs Unwind

BTC is trading at $80,780.9 on the 1H chart, sitting just above the 48-hour and 7-day swing low of $80,461.6 after sliding from a 7-day high of $84,875.2. Price is below every major moving average, and a crowded long book is being unwound. The $80K psychological floor is now the level that matters.

Indicator Analysis

Moving Averages

The MA20 ($81,210.3), MA60 ($81,842.6) and MA120 ($82,231.6) are stacked in bearish order, and price trades below all three. The MA20 is roughly $430 overhead and is the first dynamic ceiling. The MA120 sits right on top of the 48-hour swing high of $82,227.6, which makes the $82K area a layered resistance zone. ADX at 65.6 confirms this is a strong trend, not a choppy range.

→ Trend structure favors selling rallies into the $81.2K–82.2K band.

RSI

RSI(14) reads 34.5. It is weak but not yet oversold, so there is still room for another leg lower before sellers run out of fuel. A dip under 30 near $80K would set up a cleaner bounce signal than anything visible right now.

→ Bearish momentum, but not stretched enough to chase shorts at current prices.

MACD

The MACD histogram is at -22.1 and below the zero line. The histogram is rising toward zero, so downside momentum is fading and short-term upside momentum is building. That fits a relief bounce inside a downtrend more than a trend reversal.

→ Expect a bounce attempt, and treat it as a selling opportunity unless MACD crosses above zero.

Williams %R

Williams %R sits at -72.7, in the lower part of its range but short of the -80 oversold threshold. Price is closing near the bottom of its recent range without the capitulation reading that usually marks a local low.

→ Sellers are in control, but the oversold flush has not printed yet.

ATR

ATR(14) is $332, or 0.41% of price. That is a moderate hourly range. Stops tighter than about 1 ATR will likely get clipped by noise, while 1.5–2 ATR (roughly $500–$660) gives trades room to breathe. The Bollinger width of 2.01% is expanding, which suggests volatility is picking up rather than compressing.

→ Size positions so a $500–$700 stop fits your risk budget.

CCI

CCI(20) at -75.6 is negative but still above the -100 extreme. Bearish pressure is present without being exhausted, which matches the RSI and Williams readings: weak, but not at a capitulation point.

→ Bearish bias holds, with no extreme reading to fade.

Stochastic

Stochastic %K at 27.3 has crossed above %D at 22.6 near the oversold zone. This is the most constructive short-term signal on the board. Together with the rising MACD histogram, it supports a near-term bounce.

→ A short-term bounce is likely, and the question is where it stalls.

Keltner Channel

Price sits below the Keltner midline ($81,113.8), with the lower band at $80,362.0 and the upper band at $81,865.7. The lower Keltner band, the Bollinger lower band ($80,393.7) and the swing low ($80,461.6) cluster within about $100. That makes $80.36K–80.46K a dense support pocket. The upper Keltner band lines up with the cloud top ($81,708.3) as resistance.

→ The range to trade is roughly $80.4K support to $81.7K–81.9K resistance.

On-Chain & Positioning

No fresh computed readings were available today for active addresses, stablecoin dry powder or hashrate, so this section does not quote numbers for them. The chart below shows the broader on-chain picture. Headlines report rising whale withdrawals from exchanges and about $1B of ETF inflows, yet price failed to hold the $82K handle. Spot demand is not yet strong enough to overpower derivatives-driven selling.

Bitcoin Short Setup Below $82K as Longs Unwind

  • Funding rate: 0.005%, essentially flat. Longs are not paying up aggressively, so there is no overheated premium to unwind through funding alone.
  • Long/short ratio: 2.16, with 68.3% of accounts long. Retail positioning leans heavily long while price makes lower lows. That leaves fuel for further long liquidations below $80K.
  • Open interest: down 1.66% over 24h alongside falling price. This pattern points to long positions closing or being liquidated, not fresh shorts piling in.
  • Fear & Greed: 51 (Neutral), up from 50. Sentiment has not turned fearful despite the drop, which suggests the market has not been fully flushed.

Volume and macro also lean bearish. OBV shows 24-hour distribution of -7,636 BTC, price is 0.68% below the 24h VWAP ($81,331.0), and MFI sits at 43.8. On the macro side, the US 10-year yield is at 4.99% (+0.71%), the dollar index is up to 101.81, and the S&P 500 (-0.52%) and Nasdaq (-0.21%) both closed lower. That backdrop caps upside. The Korean premium sits at a modest 1.16%, which does not point to retail FOMO.

Today’s Position Strategy

SHORT Setup (Primary)

Entry Zone Target 1 Target 2 Stop
$81,700 – $82,200 $80,800 $80,000 $82,750

Several resistance levels overlap in this entry zone: the Ichimoku cloud top, the upper Keltner band, the MA60, the $82K level and the 48h high of $82,227.6. Bearish MA alignment, ADX at 65.6, OBV distribution and a long-heavy book all favor fading a bounce into that area. The stop sits about 1.5 ATR above the swing high. Entering on the bounce rather than shorting at $80.7K avoids selling straight into the stacked support pocket.

LONG Setup (Secondary)

Entry Zone Target 1 Target 2 Stop
$79,000 – $79,400 $80,400 $81,200 $78,350

A long only makes sense after a flush below $80K clears out part of the 68% long crowd. That would also likely push RSI under 30 and Williams %R into oversold territory. Target 1 is the former support cluster near the Keltner lower band, and Target 2 is the MA20/Bollinger midline. The stop sits roughly 2 ATR below the $79K bid zone. If price bounces from $80.4K without ever reaching $79K, skip the long and wait for the short entry above.

Conclusion: sell bounces into $81.7K–82.2K while BTC holds below the MA stack, and only consider longs after a washout toward $79K.
