Bitcoin Short Setup at $81.5K as Longs Crowd In

BTC is trading at $80,085 on the 1H chart. It is pinned just above the $80K handle after a weekend flush to $79,178.6, which is both the 48-hour and the 7-day low. The 7-day high sits at $84,875.2, so the broader structure is a sequence of lower highs. The bounce since the low has stalled underneath every major moving average.

Indicator Analysis

Moving Averages

Price is below the MA20 ($80,269.2), MA60 ($80,522.9) and MA120 ($81,487.0). The averages are stacked in bearish order, with the fastest on the bottom. The MA120 lines up almost exactly with the $81.5K first resistance, which makes that zone a natural area for sellers to defend.

→ Trend bias stays bearish until price reclaims $80.5K and holds it.

RSI (14)

RSI reads 36.5. That is weak but not oversold, so there is still room to the downside before a reflex bounce becomes likely. Sellers have the edge without being stretched.

→ No oversold signal yet, so a break of the low would not be fighting an exhausted tape.

MACD

The histogram is at -2.2 and still below the zero line. It is ticking higher, which means bearish momentum is fading rather than accelerating. This fits the sideways drift of the last few hours more than a fresh leg down.

→ Momentum is cooling, so expect chop first before any directional move.

Williams %R

Williams %R sits at -47.9, right in the middle of its range. Price is roughly halfway between the recent high and low, so there is no extreme to lean on from this oscillator.

→ Neutral, with no edge for either side here.

ATR (14)

The 1H ATR is $408.3, or 0.51% of price. That is a moderate hourly range. A stop placed less than one ATR from entry is likely to get clipped by ordinary noise. I use roughly 1 to 1.5 ATR beyond key swing levels for invalidation below.

→ Size positions for a $400-600 adverse swing.

CCI (20)

CCI is at -35.9, mildly negative and nowhere near the -100 oversold threshold. Price is slightly below its statistical mean but not stretched.

→ Mild bearish tilt with no reversal signal.

Stochastic

%K at 52.1 is fractionally below %D at 52.5, both mid-range. This is a flat, indecisive reading that matches the sideways action inside the Ichimoku cloud ($80,000.5 to $80,129.0).

→ Wait for a decisive cross away from 50 before trusting short-term direction.

Keltner Channel

Price is below the Keltner midline ($80,199.3). The upper band is at $81,163.9 and the lower band at $79,234.6. The lower band almost coincides with the weekend low, so $79.2-79.4K is a double-confirmed support shelf. The upper band near $81.2K marks the first area where a bounce becomes stretched.

→ Fade the edges: $81.2K is short territory, and $79.2K is a reaction-long zone.

A few supporting reads round out the picture:

  • Price is 0.1% under the 24h VWAP ($80,162.8).
  • MFI is at 20.6, close to oversold.
  • OBV shows a 24h net outflow of about 25,108 BTC, meaning distribution is dominating.
  • ADX at 22.0 says a trend is forming but has not fully established.

On-Chain & Positioning

Today’s feed did not include fresh readings for active addresses, stablecoin supply or hashrate, so I won’t put numbers on them. Read the chart below for the trend rather than relying on a headline figure. The headlines carry the main point: ETF outflows and weekend liquidations drove the drop below $80K. Some analysts are framing the $80K area as a zone to accumulate on every touch.

Bitcoin Short Setup at $81.5K as Longs Crowd In

  • Funding rate: 0.0081%. This is positive but low, so leverage is not overheated on the long side.
  • Long/short ratio: 2.23, with 69.1% of accounts long. That is a heavily one-sided crowd.
  • Open interest: +0.54% over 24h, even as price fell. New longs are being added into weakness and are now underwater.
  • Fear & Greed: 50 (Neutral), down from 54.

This combination is the core of today’s view. Rising OI, a crowded long side and falling price form a classic setup for a long squeeze if $79.4K gives way.

Macro adds pressure going into the Fed decision:

  • The US 10-year yield is at 4.99%, up 0.71% on the day.
  • The S&P 500 slipped 0.52% and the Nasdaq 0.21%.
  • The dollar index is little changed at 101.73.
  • Gold is up 0.26% at $4,018.3.

The Korean premium is a modest 0.58%, which shows no sign of retail mania.

Today’s Position Strategy

SHORT Setup (Primary)

Item Level
Entry zone $81,000 – $81,500 (scale in), add near $82,000 if tested
Target 1 $80,100 (Ichimoku cloud / VWAP area)
Target 2 $79,400 (weekend low shelf)
Target 3 $78,000 (second support, on a confirmed breakdown)
Invalidation Hourly close above $83,000

Several levels stack up in the entry zone:

  • The 48h high ($80,999.9)
  • The Keltner upper band ($81,163.9)
  • The MA120 ($81,487)

A bounce into that cluster offers the best risk-to-reward against a crowded long book. The stop sits above the $82.6K key resistance plus a buffer of roughly one ATR, so a normal wick will not knock you out.

If $79.4K breaks first without a bounce, do not chase. Wait for a retest of $79.4-79.6K from below before entering.

LONG Setup (Secondary, counter-trend)

Item Level
Entry zone $79,200 – $79,450
Target 1 $80,270 (MA20 / Bollinger mid)
Target 2 $80,520 (MA60)
Target 3 $81,000 (48h high)
Invalidation Hourly close below $78,700

The weekend low ($79,178.6) and the Keltner lower band ($79,234.6) form a clear support shelf. MFI at 20.6 also suggests selling pressure is close to exhaustion on a short-term basis. Treat this as a quick reaction trade with reduced size, and take profit into the moving averages.

The stop is placed a bit more than one ATR under the swing low. A clean break there would likely trigger the long liquidation cascade toward $78K.

This is market analysis, not financial advice. Manage your own risk and size every position as if the stop will be hit. If you want to cut trading costs, fee-payback signup links for BingX and Bitunix are at the end of this post.

Conclusion: lean short on bounces into $81-81.5K with a stop above $83K, and only take longs as quick reactions at the $79.2-79.4K shelf.
