Bitcoin Short Setup Below $80K: Entry, Stop and Targets

Bitcoin is trading at $79,903.9 on the 1H chart, just under the $80k pivot after slipping below the $82k level that had acted as support. Over the last 48 hours price has ranged between $79,321.8 and $80,999.9. The 7-day low sits at $79,178.6, well below the weekly high of $84,875.2, so the short-term structure is lower highs pressing into the bottom of the range.

Indicator Analysis

Moving Averages

Price is below all three key averages: MA20 at $80,095.5, MA60 at $80,355.4 and MA120 at $81,030.0. The stack is in bearish order, with the faster averages under the slower ones. That alignment is the clearest sign that sellers control the hourly trend. The $80,100-$80,400 band formed by MA20 and MA60 is the first area overhead where rallies are likely to stall.

→ Trend bias is down while price stays under MA60 ($80,355).

RSI

RSI(14) reads 48.4, slightly below the 50 midline and far from oversold. Momentum leans bearish, but it is not stretched. That leaves room for further downside before any exhaustion signal appears.

→ No oversold cushion yet, so shorts are not chasing an exhausted move.

MACD

The MACD histogram is at -20.6 and below the zero line. It shows bearish momentum holding or strengthening rather than fading. Until the histogram contracts toward zero, bounces should be treated as corrective.

→ Momentum confirms the bearish MA structure.

Williams %R

Williams %R at -65.8 places price in the lower half of its recent range. It is not yet in the -80 to -100 oversold zone. Sellers have the edge, but the reading does not suggest capitulation.

→ Weak, but not washed out.

ATR

The 14-period ATR is $449, or 0.56% of price. That is a moderate hourly range. It means stops tighter than roughly $300-400 are likely to be hit by normal noise, and one-ATR targets are realistic within a few sessions.

→ Size positions so a stop of about 1.5-2 ATR (roughly $700-900) fits your risk budget.

CCI

CCI(20) is -59.7, below zero but above the -100 threshold that would mark an extended selloff. It agrees with the other oscillators: mild bearish pressure without an extreme.

→ Bearish tilt confirmed, with no reversal signal.

Stochastic

Stochastic %K is 34.2 and %D is 34.7. %K is fractionally under %D, and both sit in the lower-middle zone above 20. There is no bullish cross from oversold yet, so the oscillator gives no long trigger.

→ Watch for a %K cross above %D below 20 as an early long cue.

Keltner Channel

Price sits below the Keltner midline of $80,131.6, with the lower band at $79,197.9 and the upper at $81,065.3. The lower band lines up almost exactly with the 7-day low of $79,178.6. That makes $79,200 an important near-term floor and a natural first target for shorts.

→ $79,200 is the line between range-bound weakness and a deeper flush.

Not every signal is bearish. The Ichimoku Tenkan ($80,124.2) is above the Kijun ($80,070.6), and 24h OBV is rising by +7,514 BTC. That suggests some dip buying underneath. Price is still below the cloud and below the 24h VWAP of $80,062.7, but this divergence is the main reason to keep short exposure measured. ADX at 36.6 confirms a strong trend is in place.

On-Chain & Positioning

Today’s update focuses on derivatives positioning and flow data. For the broader on-chain backdrop, see the chart below.

Bitcoin Short Setup Below $80K: Entry, Stop and Targets
  • Funding rate: 0.01%, a neutral baseline reading. Longs are not yet paying a heavy premium.
  • Long/short ratio: 2.23, with 69.0% of accounts long. Retail positioning is heavily one-sided while price drifts lower, which is fuel for a long squeeze.
  • Open interest: up 1.76% in 24h while price fell. New positions are being added into weakness. Given the long-heavy account split, many of those are likely trapped longs.
  • Fear & Greed: 50 (Neutral), down from 54. Sentiment is cooling, but it is nowhere near fear levels that usually mark local bottoms.

On the macro side, the S&P 500 gained 0.7% and the Nasdaq rose 0.82%, yet BTC failed to follow. The dollar index rose 0.19% to 102.0, and gold added 0.58%. Headlines point to US-Iran tension and renewed rate-hike worries. That relative weakness against equities supports the bearish lean. The Korean premium is a modest 0.83%, which shows no local buying frenzy.

Today’s Position Strategy

SHORT Setup (Primary)

Entry zone Target 1 Target 2 Stop
$80,100 – $80,400 $79,200 $78,000 $81,100

The entry zone stacks MA20, VWAP, the Ichimoku cloud ($80,097-$80,161) and MA60. That makes it a dense resistance cluster for a pullback short. The stop sits above the 48h high of $80,999.9 and the Keltner upper band, about two ATR from entry. Targets are the Keltner lower band and 7-day low, then the $78k first support. The crowded long positioning and rising open interest add squeeze risk to the downside. A close back above $82k invalidates the bearish thesis entirely.

LONG Setup (Secondary, counter-trend)

Entry zone Target 1 Target 2 Stop
$79,000 – $79,250 $80,100 $80,950 $78,500

This is a tactical bounce trade off the $79,180-$79,200 floor, where the 7-day low and Keltner lower band meet. Rising OBV and the bullish Tenkan/Kijun cross give it some backing. Only take it if price holds the zone and Stochastic turns up. Keep size smaller than the short, because the trend, MACD and MA alignment all point the other way. Exit quickly if $78,500 breaks.

Conclusion: Sell rallies into $80,100-$80,400 with a stop above $81,100, targeting $79,200 then $78,000. The bias flips to neutral only on a close above $82k.
