Bitcoin Short Setup Below $79K as RSI Slips Under 30

BTC is trading at $76,825, pressed against the lower edge of its 7-day range after a slide from the $81,954 swing high to a $76,270 low. Price sits under every major moving average, and the bands have tightened. Breaks out of tight bands tend to move fast, so it matters which side gives way first.

Indicator Analysis

Moving Averages

On the 1H chart, price is below the MA20 ($77,546), MA60 ($79,376) and MA120 ($79,840). The averages are in full bearish order, with the shorter averages under the longer ones. The MA20 is roughly 0.9% above price and acts as the first ceiling on any bounce. The MA60 and MA120 cluster near $79.4K to $79.8K, which overlaps the $79,200 resistance.

→ Trend structure is bearish; rallies into $77.5K and $79.2K to $79.8K are areas to sell, not chase.

RSI (14)

RSI reads 29.6, just inside oversold territory. That signals stretched downside momentum, not a reversal. In a strong trend, RSI can hold below 30 for several sessions. A move back above 40 would be the first sign that sellers are losing control.

→ Oversold enough to make fresh shorts at $76.8K a poor entry, not enough to call a bottom.

MACD

The MACD histogram is +13.7 and rising, so short-term momentum is improving. However, the lines remain below the zero line. This pattern usually produces relief bounces inside a downtrend rather than a trend change.

→ A bounce is building, and it is likely to run into overhead resistance.

Williams %R

Williams %R sits at -71.2. That is in the lower half of its range but not past the -80 oversold threshold. Sellers have room to push further before this oscillator gets exhausted.

→ No exhaustion signal yet, which leaves the door open to a retest of $76.3K.

ATR

The 14-period ATR is $575.5, about 0.75% of price per hour. Volatility is moderate, but the Bollinger width of only 2.93% points to a squeeze, which often comes before an expansion. Stops tighter than about 1.5x ATR (roughly $860) risk getting clipped by normal noise.

→ Size positions for an expansion move and keep stops beyond 1.5 to 2x ATR from entry.

CCI (20)

CCI is -98.4, right at the -100 line that marks a strong bearish deviation. Pressure is intense but not extreme. A close above -50 would confirm the bounce has traction.

→ Bearish pressure is intact, near the level where short-term bounces usually start.

Stochastic

%K at 28.8 has crossed above %D at 26.7, a small bullish cross near the oversold zone. This lines up with the rising MACD histogram. Together they suggest a short-term upward drift is likely first.

→ Expect a relief leg, then judge it at resistance.

Keltner Channel

Price is near the lower Keltner band ($76,364), with the midline at $77,579 and the upper band at $78,794. The lower Bollinger band ($76,411) and the 48h low ($76,270) sit within about $100 of the Keltner floor, which makes $76.3K to $76.4K a clear support cluster. ADX at 36.1 shows a strong trend, so a band break could extend rather than snap back.

→ $76.3K is the line in the sand; the Keltner midline and upper band ($77.6K and $78.8K) are the bounce targets that sellers will defend.

On-Chain & Positioning

On-chain readings for active addresses, stablecoin reserves and hashrate are shown in the chart below. Flow data on the exchange side is clearly negative. OBV over the last 24 hours fell by 55,679 BTC, which signals distribution, and MFI at 25 confirms money flowing out. Price is about 0.98% below the 24h VWAP ($77,583), so intraday buyers are underwater.

Bitcoin Short Setup Below $79K as RSI Slips Under 30

  • Funding rate: 0.01%, a neutral baseline. Shorts are not crowded, so a short squeeze is not the main risk.
  • Long/short ratio: 2.75, with 73.3% of accounts long. Retail is heavily positioned for a bounce while price falls.
  • Open interest: +2.54% in 24h. New positions are being added into the decline, mostly from the long side, which leaves more fuel for liquidation cascades if $76.3K fails.
  • Fear & Greed: 30 (Fear), down sharply from 51. The mood shifted quickly.

Macro is not helping either. The Nasdaq fell 2.86%, the S&P 500 fell 1.82%, and gold dropped 3.63%. That is cross-asset deleveraging, not a crypto-only problem. The Korean premium is a modest 0.62%, so there is no sign of panic buying from Korean retail traders either.

Today’s Position Strategy

SHORT Setup (Primary)

Item Level
Entry zone $78,500 to $79,200
Target 1 $76,300
Target 2 $75,000
Stop (invalidation) $80,100

This is the primary setup because the trend is clear: moving averages are in bearish order, price is below the cloud, the Tenkan line is under the Kijun, ADX is 36, and OBV is in distribution. The entry zone covers the Kijun ($78,542), the upper Keltner band ($78,794), the cloud top ($79,112) and the $79,200 resistance. It lets the MACD and Stochastic bounce play out instead of shorting into oversold conditions. The stop sits above the $80K level, where a reclaim would undo the bearish structure. With a mid-entry near $78,850, the stop is about $1,250 away and Target 1 is about $2,550 away.

LONG Setup (Secondary, counter-trend)

Item Level
Entry zone $75,000 to $75,600
Target 1 $76,800
Target 2 $77,550
Stop (invalidation) $73,900

This is a tactical bounce trade, not a trend call. It only makes sense if a flush below $76.3K tags the $75K psychological support while RSI is deeply oversold. Crowded longs and rising open interest make that kind of liquidation wick plausible. Targets are the current price area and the VWAP/MA20 zone. The stop goes under the $74K secondary support, roughly 2x ATR below entry. Use smaller size than the short, and take profit quickly at Target 1.

The trend filter for both setups is a weekly close below $75K. That would confirm a deeper leg toward $74K and lower. Holding above it keeps this a range-low test.

Everything here is market analysis, not financial advice, so manage size according to your own risk tolerance. If you trade these setups, fee-payback signup links for BingX and Bitunix are at the end of this post.

Conclusion: Bias stays short. Let the oversold bounce reach $78.5K to $79.2K and sell it with a stop above $80.1K, keeping $75K as the level that decides the next leg.
