Bitcoin Short Setup Below $78K as Longs Stay Crowded

Bitcoin is trading at $75,428 on the 1H chart after a sharp drop from the 48-hour high of $81,188. Price is now just above the 7-day swing low of $75,158. The sell-off followed a 5.5% slide in the Nasdaq. BTC now sits below every major moving average and below the 24h VWAP, which leaves the short-term structure in sellers’ hands.

Indicator Analysis

Moving Averages

Price is below all three tracked averages:

  • MA20: 76,448
  • MA60: 78,272
  • MA120: 77,935

The alignment is mixed rather than cleanly stacked. The MA20 has slipped under both longer averages, while the MA60 still sits above the MA120. That cluster between 77.9k and 78.3k is now the resistance band that any rebound must clear.

→ Bias stays bearish while price holds under the 76.4k–78.3k moving average stack.

RSI

RSI(14) reads 41.0. Momentum is on the bearish side of 50 but nowhere near oversold. This leaves room for further downside before buyers get a statistical edge, and it also means a rebound from here would not be driven by an extreme reading.

→ Neutral-bearish, with no oversold signal yet.

MACD

The histogram is at -3.2, below the zero line, but it is rising toward zero. Bearish momentum is fading after the dump, even though the trend signal has not flipped. A histogram crossing above zero would signal that a relief bounce toward resistance is underway.

→ Downside momentum is cooling, which supports a bounce-then-sell scenario.

Williams %R

Williams %R is at -80.3, right at the oversold threshold. Price is closing near the bottom of its recent range, which often precedes short-lived bounces in a strong downtrend rather than a full reversal.

→ Shorting at current levels is late; better to wait for a pop.

ATR

ATR(14) is $481.7, or 0.64% of price. That is a workable hourly range for setting stops. A 1–1.5 ATR buffer equals roughly $480–$720 beyond key levels. Bollinger width of 6.3% confirms that volatility has expanded after the breakdown.

→ Size positions for roughly $500–$700 stop distances.

CCI

CCI(20) is -75.6. The reading is negative and confirms below-average pricing, but it has not reached the -100 extreme. This matches the RSI picture: bearish, but not stretched enough to call a bottom.

→ Trend pressure remains down without capitulation signals.

Stochastic

%K is 19.7 and %D is 28.3, so %K is in oversold territory and still below %D. There is no bullish crossover yet. A %K cross above %D from this zone would be the first trigger for a tactical bounce.

→ Watch for a %K/%D cross as an early bounce signal.

Keltner Channel

The channel runs from a 75,698 lower band to a 76,608 midline and a 77,518 upper band. Price at 75,428 is pressing slightly below the lower band, which is typical of a strong-trend extension. Note that ADX is very high at 76.6. The upper band lines up almost exactly with the 77.5k resistance level.

→ The 77.5k area (Keltner upper) is the first logical zone to sell rallies.

On-Chain & Positioning

Today’s data feed did not include fresh readings for active addresses, stablecoin reserves or hashrate. I am not drawing conclusions from those metrics this session and am leaning on flow and derivatives data instead. Flow data is clearly negative:

  • OBV: fell by about 102,836 BTC over 24 hours, pointing to distribution.
  • MFI: 25.7, showing money flowing out.
  • VWAP: price is 2.01% below the 24h VWAP of 76,977.

Bitcoin Short Setup Below $78K as Longs Stay Crowded

  • Funding rate: still positive at 0.0057% despite the drop. Longs are paying to hold positions, which is an unusual stance after a 6% decline.
  • Long/short ratio: 3.07, with 75.4% of accounts long. Retail positioning is heavily one-sided, which is the setup that tends to fuel further liquidation waves.
  • Open interest: down only 1.01% in 24 hours. The selloff did not flush leverage, so many trapped longs are still in the market.
  • Fear & Greed: 28 (Fear), down from 50. That is a fast shift in sentiment, but positioning has not caught up with it.

On the macro side:

  • S&P 500 fell 4.36%.
  • Nasdaq dropped 5.52%.
  • The dollar index rose 0.31%.
  • Gold slipped 1.36%, so even havens are seeing selling.
  • The Korean premium is a mild 0.87%, so there is no sign of strong local spot demand to absorb supply.

Today’s Position Strategy

SHORT Setup (Primary)

Entry Target 1 Target 2 Stop
77,500 – 78,100 75,200 74,000 78,900

Selling a rebound into the Keltner upper band and the 77.5k–78.1k Fibonacci zone gives a defined risk of about 1.5–2.5 ATR. The setup is invalid on a break above 78.7k, where the weekly open sits near 78.4k; the stop adds a buffer above that.

Crowded longs, positive funding, barely-reduced open interest and risk-off equities all point to unfinished liquidation. Take partial profit near the 75.2k swing low. Close the rest around 74k, since a cascade into that level can trigger a violent short squeeze.

LONG Setup (Secondary, Counter-Trend)

Entry Target 1 Target 2 Stop
74,000 – 74,300 75,700 76,450 73,300

This is a reaction trade only. It targets the 74k support, which sits near the Bollinger lower band at 74,042. That zone is where a long-liquidation flush is most likely to exhaust. Targets are the Keltner lower band and then the MA20/Bollinger midline.

Use smaller size and require a Stochastic bullish cross or a clear wick rejection before entering. The 73.3k stop sits roughly 1.5 ATR under support, and the 72k second support is the next magnet if it fails.

Conclusion: Sell rebounds into 77.5k–78.1k while longs stay crowded, take profits near 74k, and stand aside if price reclaims 78.7k.
